12/19 – Sagittarius New Moon: A Riot At The Roots

Riot At The Roots

A New Moon: riot at the Roots

Thank you for your patience with us. The past few months have been profoundly eventful for both my astrological partner and me. Yet this New Moon arrived so creatively rich that it called us—quite insistently—out of our respective life storms and back into shared creation. What emerged felt important to offer you now.

This New Moon is a riot in the roots. Everything that happens is to help you anchor in for expansion ahead.  Growth, redirection, and refinement are underway at the most fundamental levels of being. At the heart of this lunation sits a deceptively simple question:

How well can you sit with uncertainty?

From there, the inquiry deepens:
What actions do you choose in moments of not-knowing—and why?  Are you willing to stop and examine what you do in service of living your best life?

The Astrology: Standing at a Fork in the Road

Jupiter is the clear leader of this lunation, amplified by a concentration of planets in Sagittarius—Jupiter’s home sign. That emphasis is further strengthened by Jupiter retrograde in Cancer, where it is exalted, turning expansion inward toward emotional roots, memory, and belonging.

Add to this an exalted Mars in Capricorn, and we arrive at a powerful tension point—two very different paths of action. One is grounded, conscious, and responsive. The other is reactive, self-righteous, and fueled by fear disguised as certainty.

This is not abstract astrology. It’s deeply lived.

Not-Knowing as a Rite of Passage

Not knowing has been my companion these past months. Not as a failure of insight, but rather as a state of surrender—an unmooring that refuses tidy conclusions. My colleague Adam Elenbaas named this beautifully in a recent reflection, speaking to the Neptunian fog surrounding this New Moon. There are so many layers of evolution here that even understanding itself can feel just out of reach. His words met something true in me, and what follows is an offering, shaped by lived terrain.

My present reality has been altered by the death of my last remaining parent. With that loss came a quiet, unmistakable threshold: I became the adult in the room. At any age, this moment carries gravity. Something fundamental rearranges. The invisible scaffolding of “someone else above me” dissolves, and in its absence, a deeper responsibility arrives—not loudly, but irrevocably.

Much of life is spent adapting in order to remain connected. Sometimes that adaptation asks for compromise; sometimes it quietly asks us to disappear. We bend, we conform, we negotiate our edges so we can stay within the circle of belonging. And yet, at a certain depth, the choice returns to us alone. My current circumstances have made that truth impossible to avoid.

I trust that, in time, the poetry of this will come more easily. For now, I steady myself with prose—handrails along a steep and unfamiliar path.

But we are all undergoing our own version of it with Chiron and Eris square to retrograde Jupiter.  You are asked to decide whether you go forward letting outside authority shape much of your life or whether you decide.

The work is not to rush clarity.
It is to slow down enough to notice when we default to history.
To feel where the body tightens around the familiar.
To recognize when predictability masquerades as safety.

And to remain open—
curious enough to imagine a life that has not yet been rehearsed,
a way forward that is not inherited,
but chosen.

Jupiter Retrograde in Cancer: Rewriting the Original Script

This New Moon, with Jupiter retrograde in Cancer, offers a rare invitation:
to observe where childhood programming still quietly governs adult choices.

What emotions arise when you question what you believe—and why you believe it?  What you do – and why you do it that way
How much of it exists in service of belonging, safety, or approval?  Or exists because you believe you can side step perceived failures if you do what is known.

We do sneaky things to belong. Perhaps e persuade—quietly or loudly. We justify. We recruit others into our worldview so we can feel secure. Just look at the headlines; the pattern is everywhere.

Research tells us that shared hatred of a common enemy is the weakest form of bonding, yet it proliferates during times of uncertainty. This is not new. It appears whenever the ground beneath us is shifting.

Off Autopilot: The Discomfort of Choice

What has surprised me most is how much of my day is dictated by what I should do. So much so that what I genuinely love can get lost in the welter. And when I move toward what I want, fear rises quickly—that I won’t achieve, won’t succeed, won’t be safe.

The indoctrination to accomplish runs deep.

So what do we do?

There is a path that honors both delight and responsibility—but it isn’t clearly marked. Living inside that ambiguity is my current stretch. My practice right now is tending compassionately to the parts of me that panic at the idea of getting it wrong.

I’m learning to recognize confusion not as failure, but as a sign that I’ve stepped off autopilot and into a more embodied, creative life. It’s uncomfortable—deeply so. Yet I also see clearly now: there is no external authority who understands my lived experience better than I do.

That makes me the expert.
Exhilarating. And unnerving.

Quantum Threads: Creation Begins in Uncertainty

From a quantum perspective, uncertainty is not a flaw—it’s the fertile field. When outcomes are not fixed, possibility expands. Observation, choice, and intention matter more than certainty ever could.

This New Moon invites you to inhabit that field consciously.

Your past—failures and successes alike—is not a verdict. It is raw material. Meaning is not assigned from outside; it is generated through relationship and choice. Your story is yours to write.

So is everyone else’s.  Can you tolerate mistakes on your learning curve?  Those errors are the beginning of wisdom if you can.

The Shadow of the Lunation: Righteousness vs Right Action

The shadow side of this New Moon, especially with the Sun/Moon square Neptune and Mars exalted in Capricorn, is the temptation toward self-righteous crusades. When fear of the unknown grows too large, opinion hardens into “fact,” and interpretation masquerades as undeniable truth.

Watch for this—within yourself and around you. What takes root now will shape what blooms in the coming year.  Learn to identify when being right consumes the whole experience of exploring what is right for you in this moment.

Can you stay open to face the fear of a new path, one completely unfamiliar to you?  My colleague Adam Elenbaas so eloquently stated it here:

“What happens when the light you’ve been following—your sense of purpose, your clear direction—suddenly vanishes into a deep, dissolving fog? This is the central invitation of the current New Moon, as the Sun in Sagittarius meets the mist-shrouded square of Neptune.

This new moon does not promise clarity. It doesn’t offer proof. It doesn’t negotiate outcomes. Instead, it asks a quieter question: can you act with integrity without knowing how it will turn out? This is faith as presence—to speak truth without applause, to choose kindness without assurance of return. The deeper faith doesn’t ask to be rewarded; it simply asks to be lived.”

The surface may look like bare branches, offering clearer sightlines. But beneath the soil, growth is profound and consequential when you step up to the challenge.

Tarot as an Inner Map

Mind / Body / Heart / Spirit

This spread doesn’t ask us to fix anything. It shows us where consciousness is currently organizing itself as we move through uncertainty.

Mind — Justice

Justice in the mind position asks for radical self-honesty, not judgment. This is about noticing the internal narratives that quietly arbitrate your choices—what you tell yourself is “reasonable,” “responsible,” or “true.”

Under this New Moon, Justice invites you to examine whether your thinking is aligned with who you are now, or if it is still enforcing agreements made long ago in the name of safety or belonging. This is not about right versus wrong—it’s about accurate reflection. What happens when you allow your mind to update the evidence?

Body — Eight of Swords

In the body, the Eight of Swords points to bodily constraint—the physical sensation of being boxed in by beliefs that once served a purpose. The body often reacts first when we are living inside outdated frameworks: tension, fatigue, shallow breath, a sense of bracing.

This card suggests that many of the limits you feel are no longer external realities, but internalized rules. The moment you recognize them as such, the bind begins to loosen. Freedom here doesn’t come from force—it comes from awareness and gentleness.

Heart — Queen of Cups

The Queen of Cups in the heart position is emotional maturity without self-sacrifice. She doesn’t bypass feeling, but she also doesn’t drown in it.

Under this lunation, she asks: Can you hold your own emotional experience with compassion, without making it someone else’s responsibility to fix? This is deep self-trust—the ability to feel fully while remaining anchored. When the heart is tended this way, it becomes a stabilizing force rather than a reactive one.

Spirit — Seven of Pentacles

Spirit speaks through patience. The Seven of Pentacles reminds us that meaningful growth often looks like waiting, reassessing, and staying present with what we’ve already planted.

This card affirms that nothing is wasted—even periods that appear unproductive are part of the larger arc. Spirit here is not urging speed, but discernment: What is worth continued investment? What needs to be tended differently? Trust that the roots are strengthening, even if the results aren’t yet visible.

The Thread That Binds the Spread

Together, these cards echo the deeper message of this New Moon:
Liberation does not arrive through certainty or control, but through conscious participation with what is emerging.

Justice clarifies the lens.
The Eight of Swords reveals where we’ve outgrown our own constraints.
The Queen of Cups teaches us how to stay emotionally present without collapse.
And the Seven of Pentacles asks us to honor the timing of real growth.

This is how we stay with uncertainty—and allow it to become creative rather than paralyzing.

New Moon Audio:

Choosing the Bigger Story

In the weeks following this New Moon, planets move through Capricorn opposite Jupiter, offering fertile ground to recalibrate your internal narrative. Who are you now, when you account for the whole of your lived experience?

Life is not a tally of wins and losses. It is the combination of all you’ve experienced.

Let Sagittarius’ expansive lens help you shape who you are becoming—not tied to a single outcome, but aligned with a worthy aim: authenticity in an increasingly unstable world. Sagittarius is fond of making meaning out of all the random data Gemini offers.  Guide it with intention to refine your purpose, not your ‘results’ as measurement of progress.  That is too small a metric to use for your lived experience in total.  See your whole self, or at least include that as a worth goal.

That is safe passage.

Working with the Tension

Be cautious of those—inside or outside yourself—who insist on defining circumstances for others. This impulse is often rooted in fear, even when it appears helpful or righteous. Stay curious about how you define “help.” Where did that definition come from, and does it still fit who you are now?

Watch for certainty. It is usually a strategy for feeling safe in a changing world. Discomfort is not a signal of inadequacy—it may be evidence that you’ve outgrown your previous limits.

Breathe. Place a hand on your heart and belly. Anxiety often signals the belief that your resources are insufficient to the tasks at hand. Question that assumption. Doubt your doubts.

What if everything you need is already present—just unfamiliar?

Tending the Roots

Results may come slowly in the coming weeks. This is intentional. The sky is asking us to recalibrate our investments of time, energy, and attention—especially those rooted in the wounded child seeking too much or too little validation.

Blame leads nowhere.  It’s a closed loop. When it shows up, let it be a spotlight on where you don’t yet know your own power to shape whatever the story is and do something better with it than look for what’s outside of you to change.
Invention, curiosity, and resourcefulness lead forward.

Tend the roots now. Prepare the ground thoughtfully. The seeds you choose during this cycle will find a rich home—and what blooms by summer will reflect the care you gave here.

Negative emotions will arise. They move in waves—often ten minutes at a time. Ride them. Breathe. When they pass, you get to choose again.  When you allow them to exist you recapture their energy and repurpose it towards a more informed and innovative next step.

This is your world when you fully embrace your adulthood:
as the one who listens patiently to the younger voices within, guiding them toward an integrated, authentic self.  One who winces at rejection but doesn’t collapse.  The right fit is out there, rejection reveals where you are not matched.  It doesn’t mean there isn’t one waiting.

Keep going.  Failures offer rich ground to change the way you speak to yourself.  Will you be responsible for what can be done better without shame or blame?  What is your particular mix of soothing the frayed feelings and then challenging yourself to do better with what you’ve learned?  Now you are on the path to being so strongly anchored, rooted, that the winds of change cannot topple you as you grow.

And that—quietly, powerfully—is the work of this New Moon
